Agent Overview

The Agent facilitates the configuration of printers within a local network using a designated Windows Print Server. This setup enables Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to print directly to the configured printers. Supported printer types include:

  • Standard printers
  • ZPL label printers
  • SBPL label printers

Additionally, the agent supports integration with local network devices and systems, such as weighbridges, scales, and point-of-sale terminals, enabling seamless connectivity with Business Central.

Components

The Agent comprises the following components:

  1. Business Central Extension
    Provides configuration and setup capabilities for printing documents, and processing data directly from Business Central.

  2. Windows Service
    Establishes network connectivity between Business Central and local network printers and other systems.

  3. Windows Configuration Tool (used during setup only)
    A utility installed on the Windows Print Server to assist in the creation and configuration of new Windows Services.

Terminology

To ensure clarity throughout this documentation, the following terms are used consistently:

  • Windows Service
    A service listed in the Services applet on the Windows Print Server. Each service is dedicated to a single Business Central company and connects to one Agent Service within that company.

  • Agent Service
    A record in Business Central that identifies a corresponding Windows Service running on the Windows Print Server. There is a one-to-one relationship between a Windows Service and an Agent Service.

  • Windows Configuration Tool
    A Windows-based application installed on the Print Server, designed to simplify the creation and configuration of Windows Services.
